NRECA has several software application developer positions available.  The following explains the who’s, what’s, where’s and how’s:

Who we are:

NRECA is the national service organization for more than 900 not-for-profit rural electric cooperatives and public power districts providing retail electric service to more than 42 million consumers in 47 states and whose retail sales account for approximately 12 percent of total electricity sales in the United States.

The NRECA employee benefits (NEB) portal team is a small band of highly motivated brothers & sisters that support a suite of web applications for our insurance and financial services sector.

Location:

NRECA has IT locations in Lincoln, NE and Atlanta, GA, but we are currently recruiting candidates for our Arlington, VA headquarters that is a block away from the Ballston metro.  While northern VA is not known for great commutes, NRECA does offer great perks to help - like working from home, commuter assistance programs, flexible schedules etc.

What We Do:

In one line: we work on all things WEB related to support our health, pension, and 401k systems.

NEB has a lot of projects: Some are built on classic asp.NET, some with MVC, some with a focus on domain driven architecture and the latest: an event-driven architecture featuring an Angular.js UX interfacing with REST, based SOA services using RabbitMQ as the messaging infrastructure and NodeJS as our web server and API aggregator. Overall, the architecture is based on the MEAN stack with the enterprise concerns being managed by our own custom designed event-engine (SOA, REST, RabbitMQ).  If you like cool code, you love our event engine.

This new architecture has taken us down a road where we are developing REST based APIs for a majority of our systems. Our goal is to have each of the underlying benefits systems exposed through RESTful APIs. If you love API work and you believe microservices is more than just the latest fad, you’ll find a lot here that will tickle your fancy and put your skills to the test.

As you can see we have a mix of old and new technologies. You will generally be working on more than one codebase on any given week, with a fair share of flexibility to choose tasks that seem important or simply interesting. Some codebases are relatively young, others are 6-8 years old.

How We Do It :
Our developers work in small groups that range from 2 to 4 software developers per project team, mostly following Agile and Lean methodologies.  A typical team usually consists of a dedicated tester, scrum master and product owners in addition.  Oh, and we love DevOps.  If you like docker, puppet, Octopus, and slick build tools like gulp; we have amazing build engineers that will help you push the limits.

Like any organization that runs its projects in house we have some things we do really well and some things we continue to improve upon.

We look to work collaboratively with our business partners, debug or design things, write code and tests, pass QA/code review, and move on to the next thing. Most of the time you get input on what to work on.
